Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, commonly known as PCOS as the name suggest is a syndrome (collection of diseases) which occur because of the multiple number of cysts which form in the ovary. A question which strikes all of our minds is, what could be the possible reason for the occurrence of cysts in an otherwise normal organ. To answer this, there are multiple reasons which could lead to PCOS, one of the most common reason is the production of male sex hormones in a higher than normal quantity in a female’s body. Normally, the concentration of the male sex hormones in a female is very minimal but when this hormone increases, it leads to hormone imbalance which as a result causes them to either skip their menstrual periods or make them seemingly irregular and in turn makes it harder for them to conceive. Apart from menstrual cycle irregularity, another clinical symptom seen is male pattern hair growth on the body, on the face, chest and pubic areas. Another complaint which seems to be worrisome to the patients is weight gain, more than 70% of the patients of PCOS experience weight gain as the disease sets in and to your surprise, the very step in the management of PCOS is also reduction of weight(if the patient is obese). The patients is advised to switch to a healthier lifestyle and to exercise regularly to loose the excess weight. Apart from these lifestyle changes, a regular visit to your gynaecologist to keep up with hormone supplements and work up would be a complete solution.
